We tend to think of homeschooling as being for older students, but homeschool pre k programs are thriving for a reason. Many parents are finding the need and desire to teach their littlest ones at home as well.
There's an old saying that a child’s education begins at home, and it's probably a very true statement. Parents have the most control over their children’s learning experience before they are ever at an age to participate in the traditional school system. Even though it may not seem like you are homeschooling your children, in all reality you can set your child apart from the rest by simply helping them learn the basics of education at home by teaching them numbers, letters, the concept of reading from left to right, and many other things.
The best part about this is that children love spending time with their parents and if you can turn this quality time you are spending with your child into and educational experience without it seeming like a chore to learn things, you can enhance your child’s perception of learning for years to come. By simply reading to your child and watching educational children’s shows and encouraging them to participate, you are enabling them to begin their learning experience at a crucial time in their lives. These things do not have monopolize your time with your children; simply an hour a two each day can make an extreme difference. Not only will doing these things help enhance your child’s ability to learn, it will also boost their confidence in themselves which will further contribute to their learning ability.
But there's more you can do, too, through a homeschool pre k program. Now there is a homeschool curriculum you can use to teach your child basic skills such as math, reading, creativity, and more. Those who live in Virginia will find that many of these programs do a good job at preparing these little ones for their later school years also.
One of the greatest things about beginning your child’s education at home is the fact that you can make their initial experience with learning a fun activity. By teaching your child that learning can be fun and does not have to be mundane, you can sculpt your child’s perception to learning and allow them to have the desire to gain knowledge. Since this time is not a structured learning environment, you do not need to set rules and guidelines for their learning, you just need to encourage the concept and help them along the way.
One important thing to remember when guiding your child in their early learning is to try and keep a good deal of time spent at a table or desk to encourage your child to realize that a desk or table is the best environment to learn in. Also, it is good to keep in mind that distractions like having to kneel in a chair can be uncomfortable and inhibit the learning process so it is best to have a desk or table and chair that is built to accommodate their size, or at least have a booster seat for them to sit in if you are using adult furniture.
One good tool to begin your child’s learning experience, along with your formal curriculum materials, is a coloring book. Coloring books can teach simple rules such as coloring within the lines and they can also incorporate letters and numbers to help teach your kids the alphabet and how to count. These can also begin their transition from simply learning letters and numbers into more complex ideas like adding, subtracting, and even putting letters together to form words and sentences. Although these may seem like extremes for a child who has not even begun first grade, many children have the ability to grasp these concepts and by encouraging them to begin advancing, you are giving them a head start on their educational process.
Take the initiative and get your child involved in learning early. You can do this through informal methods such as coloring and reading, but more important, by enrolling them in a homeschool pre k program.
